"In Ramallah and much of Palestine, including Jerusalem, the Palestinian children fly homemade kites in the Palestinian skies. These kites can be plain or in the case of the one in the attached picture of a kite flying over Ramallah in the afternoon sky, they can be quite elaborate and can convey a distinctive message. The skies of Palestine come alive with these kites in the late afternoon when it is much cooler and the breeze picks up. I myself flew my own version of these kites when I was a child playing in the hills that overlook my village of Beit Hanina some 34 years ago. Everything that went into making the kites that I flew as a child came from the surrounding hills and orchards. The only "foreign objects" were the newspaper that were used, otherwise everything else that was used came from the natural surroundings...The memories of flying kites in the hills of Palestine is something that I will never forget and I was quite sure to make it a point that my own children got to experience one of my own life's most memorable pleasures recently when I took them back home to Palestine..."
