Maori kite-making for festival
16.05.2003 - Hawkes Bay Today
Matariki, a small cluster of tiny stars, appears in the dawn sky during May and June and traditionally heralds the start of celebrations to mark the end of harvesting.
One of the traditions to mark Matariki was to fly kites at dawn, when the star cluster could be seen, and chant prayers.
Events Hastings manager Amy Whiterod said the kite-making was not just about a competition, but to get more people involved in learning part of New Zealand's Maori culture.
Ten Hastings and Havelock North schools would take part in two categories - decorative design and man taratahi (kite flying) - with children judged on creativity, authenticity, and stability.
Hastings Tourism Facilities Trust chief executive Lance Bickford said
Matariki could become the main festival of Matariki celebrations in New Zealand. "We want it to become a mainstream festival and not just for Maori," Mr Bickford said.
